Our group’s essential question was “How was theme “fear” revealed in the poetry?” and what I think about this question is, any theme -not only fear- could be revealed and interpreted differently with the differences in their structure, tone, form and language.
While I was searching poems to analyse for my style analysis, I shortly skimmed plenty of poems. What I found interesting was, same poets have similar structure in their poems to talk about their prefered themes. |
I mean they use rhyme, meter and etc. in a similar way in all of their poems and mostly they write about a specific theme. If I compare my poem “Fear No More” by William Shakespeare with Shakespeare’s other poems, I observed that he always uses similar structure and writes about not fearing death.
Also, language - what I searched and work on is figurative language, metaphors- differs in poem to poem. Usage of metaphors are different when the poet is talking about not fearing death and fearing death. In “Invictus” poet uses metaphors to give courage to the reader and draw an image in the reader’s mind but in the poem “A Hymn To God The Father” Donne uses metaphors to refer his misery.
What I think is most of the time, a poet uses a similar structure and language to talk about his fear about something or not to fear a thing. But, different poets refers to different parts of the theme with their different usage of language elements and structure.
